Reinstalling and updating the Sefthy Agent

When to reinstall the agent from the DR page, how it updates on its own and why a feature sometimes asks for a newer version.

The Sefthy Agent is the program you install on the customer server. Reinstalling it touches neither the backups nor the DR protection.

When a reinstall is needed

When the server has been rebuilt or moved to new hardware, when the antivirus quarantined or removed the agent, when the service no longer starts. The install command overwrites whatever it finds, so there is nothing to uninstall first.

Reinstall the agent

  1. Open the DR page, click the More actions menu at the top right and pick Reinstall Sefthy Agent. A window opens in three steps, Confirm, Install, Connected.
  2. In Confirm you check the current agent, with version, last contact, install date and operating system. Click Generate command.
  3. Pick Windows or Linux and copy the command line, either by double clicking the dark box or with the copy icon. The command is valid for 24 hours, after that you generate another one.
  4. Open a terminal as administrator on the server and paste the command. It downloads the agent, installs it and reconnects it to this DR.
  5. Leave the Console window open. It refreshes on its own as soon as the new agent connects and shows you hostname and version. Click Done.

The old agent keeps working until the new one shows up, and only then is it replaced. The DR is never left unprotected in between.

Updates happen on their own

You never update the agent by hand. It checks on its own that it matches the version Sefthy publishes for the whole fleet and, when it does not, it updates and restarts. If the update does not take, it falls back to the previous version, so the server is never left without an agent. No ports to open, the connection always goes from the server to the Console.

When a feature asks for a newer version

Remote assistance and application checks run inside the agent, so they need an up to date agent. That holds for remote assistance and for Post-restore validation. With an old agent the entry stays in the menu but greyed out, and the message you get by hovering it tells you it has to be updated. The remote assistance entry is only visible to Sefthy staff, so there the block is reported to you by the technician. Reinstall the agent with the steps above and the server is back on the latest published version.
