Glossary
The terms that keep coming up in the Console and in the guides, explained once and in alphabetical order.
The words below are the ones you read in the Console and across the rest of the documentation. Where it helps, each entry points to the page that covers it in full.
The terms
Activation Token. The string that ties a connector to your company. The Console issues it, the connector receives it from the agent or you paste it into its local interface yourself. See Installation on x86 devices.
Archive. The service that backs up folders and SMB shares to Sefthy storage, separate from the DR of a server. It lives under the Archive menu entry. See Sefthy Archive.
Backup method. How the server sends its data to Sefthy. The Sefthy Agent runs the backup. See What is a Backup Method.
Channel licence. The voucher a distributor sells to the partner and that is spent when a DR is activated. One licence covers one DR. See Channel licences.
Cloud Extension. The connector interface facing the customer network, the one that brings the restored machine inside the site LAN. See Change the network interface used for the Cloud Extension.
Connector. The device installed on site that holds the tunnel to the Sefthy cloud and stretches the customer network up to the restored machine. One connector serves several DRs. See What is a Connector.
Deep Verify. The check that reads the backups back to make sure they are not corrupted. The DeepVerify Schedule tab shows up on the Sefthy MINI plan only. See Backup and Deep Verify schedules.
Disaster Recovery (DR). In the Console a DR is the protection of one single server, with its own plan, its own backups and its own page. A customer can have several DRs.
Emergency VPN. The encrypted tunnel that takes your engineers inside the restored machines when the site is unreachable. It needs the Sefthy PRO plan. See Emergency VPN Configuration.
Initiate DR. The button that brings up the copy of the server in the Sefthy cloud from a snapshot. See Cloud restore with the connector.
Latest Activities and Latest Tasks. Two different things on the DR page. Latest Activities is the colour map of the backups day by day, Latest Tasks is the table of single jobs with duration and outcome.
Local backup. The second backup destination, an SMB share on site. It sits alongside the cloud rather than replacing it, and has a schedule of its own.
Network drift. The difference between the network cards the agent sees on the server and the ones on record in the DR plan. The Console shows it and offers to align it, you accept or reject. See Server health and network drift.
Network extension. The link that carries the site network up to the restored machine. One is needed for every VLAN declared on the DR. See Multiple network cards and VLANs in the DR.
Orchestration. The sequence in which several DRs on the same connector come back up in order, with waits and readiness checks between one step and the next. See Orchestration.
Plafond. The ceiling of cloud resources assigned to a customer for their VMs, in CPU, RAM, storage, network cards and public IPs. Sefthy sets it. See Cloud VMs, plafond and creation.
Plans. There are four, Sefthy TRIAL, Sefthy MINI, Sefthy and Sefthy PRO. They change retention, recovery days, number of backups per day and access to features such as the Emergency VPN.
Post-restore validation. The application checks you declare on the DR, up to ten, that Sefthy runs inside the restored machine. See Post-restore application checks.
Recovery days. How long the restored machine stays up in the cloud after the DR is started. It is 20 days on Sefthy PRO, 10 on Sefthy, 7 on Sefthy MINI and Sefthy TRIAL. Not to be confused with retention.
Recovery ISO. The bootable image that brings a physical server back. The Console issues a recovery code, you type it on the machine booted from the USB stick and drive the rest from the browser. See The Sefthy Recovery ISO.
Remote assistance. The session a Sefthy engineer uses to get onto the server, after you authorise it from the Console. It lasts one hour at most and you can close it whenever you want. See Remote assistance.
Retention. How long Sefthy keeps the snapshots. It is 45 days on Sefthy PRO, 30 on Sefthy and Sefthy MINI, 7 on Sefthy TRIAL.
Return on premises. The move back from the cloud to the site at the end of the emergency, driven by a stepper on the DR page. See Return on premises after a cloud DR.
RPO. How much data you lose at worst, that is the distance between one backup and the next. You lower it by adding slots to the schedule.
RTO. How long it takes to bring the server back. The Console shows an estimated RTO and, after a restart test, the Actual RTO too.
Sefthy Agent. The program you install on the customer server. It detects hardware and network, runs the backup, looks for the connector and reports restore readiness. See The Sefthy Agent.
Snapshot. The restore point, that is the state of the server at a given moment. When you start a DR you pick the day, then the snapshot, then the disks.
Start DR Test. The control restore you launch whenever you want, in an isolated environment, without touching the real DR. See Disaster simulation.
