Disaster Simulation

The DR test restores the protected server into the Sefthy cloud the way a real disaster would, but in an isolated environment. The test machine comes up isolated from the network, so the original server keeps working and keeps backing up while you watch the copy come back to life.

Tests are counted. On Sefthy PRO you get 4 per month, on Sefthy 1. The counter starts over on the first day of the month.

Starting a test

1. Open the DR page and click Start DR Test in the action bar at the top, the button with the test tube.
2. Read the confirmation box. It tells you how many tests you have left out of the ones available, and that the machine will stay up for a maximum of 3 hours. Confirm to continue.
3. The status band on the page turns to Preparing DR while Sefthy builds the machine in the cloud. Reload the page if you sit here for a while.
4. When Restoring appears, pick the recovery point in the three steps Day, Snapshot and Disks, then press Start Recovery.
5. Once the restore is done the page confirms it and Open remote console appears. From there you get into the machine as if you were at the screen and check that the services answer.

The snapshots you see in the calendar are the ones still within your plan retention, 30 days on Sefthy and 45 on Sefthy PRO.

How it ends

After 3 hours the test machine is deleted on its own and the DR goes back to its protected state. If you are done sooner, close it with End DR Test from the same page so you do not burn time you do not need.

The test still counts, even if you close it after five minutes.

Manual test and automatic test

You launch the DR test when you want to see it with your own eyes. In parallel Sefthy runs a control restore by itself on the Sefthy and Sefthy PRO plans and writes a report about it. They are two separate things and they do not consume each other. The automatic one is covered in The automatic restore test and its report.
